Kansas gubernatorial candidate and the state's attorney general Derek Schmidt has named a running mate in his campaign for the governor’s seat.
Schmidt announced Wednesday morning that Katie Sawyer, 38, would be his running mate and candidate for Lieutenant Governor.
Schmidt officially tapped Sawyer for the campaign trail when they filed their joint candidacy for Governor and Lieutenant Governor in Topeka.
“Katie Sawyer brings a new generation of young and energetic leadership to help us move Kansas forward to a bright and better tomorrow,” Schmidt said Wednesday. “Katie’s intellect, values, tenacity, and passion for serving Kansans are what we need to leave our state better than we found it.”
Sawyer has spent nearly six years in a high-level role as a Director of In-State Operations and Constituent Service for US Senator Roger Marshall.
“I’m honored to answer this call to service and humbled that Derek has placed his confidence in me to help him get Kansas on track after years of continual disappointment from the Kelly administration,” Sawyer said in a statement Wednesday.
If elected, Sawyer would be the youngest active Republican lieutenant governor. Kansas's last and only female lieutenant governor was Shelia Frahm in 1996.
Sawyer previously taught marketing and business development at McPherson College. She also previously served as a reporter for several newspapers in Kansas.
