NAPLES, Fla. — A Collier County man was arrested for shooting a dog at the Naples Dog Park that he claims was fighting with his dog, according to the Naples Police Department (NPD).

At approximately 5 p.m., Saturday, May 28 Tyson McCord, 53, called officers to the scene and told them he shot a pitbull mix that was attacking his dog. According to the report, McCord used a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver to shoot the dog that was reportedly attacking his white German shepherd.

McCord told the owner of the pitbull that he would shoot the dog if it was not separated from his dog, according to the report. The dogs continued to growl at each other and as the pitbull’s owner attempted to pull their dog away, McCord pulled out his gun and shot the dog.

After further investigation, no visible injuries were discovered on McCord’s dog from the altercation. As for the pitbull, it suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and transported to a local pet hospital by its owner.

The dog is expected to survive its injuries, according to NPD.

McCord was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a third-degree felony and discharging a firearm in public, a first-degree misdemeanor. McCord was also banned for one year from Baker Park and the Naples Dog Park.

McCord turned himself in at Naples Police headquarters on May 31 and was transported to the Naples Jail Center.
