When Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen raced into the top two positions early in Sunday night’s Heroes Remembered 100 Super DIRT Series special at the Weedsport Speedway, the capacity crowd was expecting a race-long duel between the two heavyweights of DIRT big-block modified racing.
Instead, Friesen put on a flawless driving exhibition over the final 80 laps to score a dominating $7,500 triumph for his sixth win of the 2022 campaign. The victor lapped all but the top seven finishers that had only one caution period on the third lap, and the final 97 circuits were run under the green flag. It was Friesen’s seventh career modified win at Weedsport.
The main event started with polesitter Adam Pierson leading the first eight laps. Matt Sheppard then took over the lead, but Stewart Friesen caught him on the 18th lap and took over the top spot.
Friesen was setting a blistering pace and easily pulling away from Sheppard and the rest of the field. As the race neared its midpoint, both Erick Rudolph and Mike Mahaney got past the fading Sheppard into second and third. in the late stages of the feature, Mahaney raced into the second position but Friesen was still long gone.
At the finish, it was Friesen, Mahaney and Rudolph, with Sheppard, Larry Wight, Max McLaughlin, Gary Lindberg, Jimmy Phelps, Mat Williamson and Jack Lehner filling out the top 10 finishers. A strong field of 51 DIRT big-block modifieds was on hand.
LEBANON VALLEY: The Super DIRT Series now heads east for another 100-lap program at the Lebanon Valley Speedway on Monday evening. The King of Spring 100 on the high-banked, half-mile LV oval carries a hefty $13,500 winner’s check and a guaranteed starting spot in this October’s Super DIRT Week 200 finale at Oswego Speedway.
