AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) - Memorial Day will feature one more day of above normal temperatures and breezy to gusty winds. This will create critical fire conditions for another afternoon.
The Midpoint fire in Oldham and Deaf Smith county as of Monday morning is up to 77% containment and just over 3,700 acres burned but continued improvement on the fire will be difficult this afternoon when winds gust to 40 MPH and relative humidity values fall into the 5-10% range.
A cold front will slowly sink south through the day today and then blast through most if not the entire Panhandles region by Tuesday morning. This will kill off most of our Storm chances for the area Tuesday but the Southeast Texas Panhandle will be under the gun for an Enhanced risk for severe storms (level 3 out of 5).
Based on previous experiences with late season cold fronts, models will usually struggle on their placement but they typically don't stall out in the Panhandles but rather continue further south.
Current thoughts are that the severe weather threat placement by the Storm Prediction Center is misplaced too far northwest and will be adjusted further southeast over the next 24 hours. We think that places like Childress, Paducah, Matador, Memphis, & Wellington will be most favored rather than locations like Claude, McLean, Pampa, & Canadian for the highest severe weather threat.
All severe weather hazards will be possible where storms develop with very large hail near baseball size being the primary threat and an isolated tornado threat initially before storms merge together then winds and flash flooding become the highest concerns later Tuesday evening as we move past sunset.
The cold front will retreat north Wednesday and help introduce better rain chances over a larger portion of the area Wednesday through Friday as northwest flow aloft will bring daily T-Storm chances out of Southeast Colorado and Northeast New Mexico into the Panhandles region.
Some severe weather will be possible each afternoon but should be fairly limited later in the week given the colder temperatures that are expected. Large hail and damaging winds would be primary hazards from Wednesday through Friday.
