Area 1A state track roundup

Even a May snowstorm couldn’t keep local student-athletes from shining at last weekend’s Class 1A State Track and Field Meet in Lakewood. The area was well represented, with several competitors bringing home gold medals from the meet.
After a day of temperatures near 90 degrees on Thursday, a cold front moved into the area on Friday, dumping a foot or more of snow in some places. That led to the postponement of events until Saturday, creating a need to finish competition on Sunday.
Stratton’s boys finished in fifth place overall, scoring 54 points. That was one more than Arickaree/Woodlin. Hi-Plains tied for 14th place with Lone Star, with both teams scoring 17 points. Idalia was alone in 16th place with 15 points.
Each of the three local programs had a champion, with Charlie Clapper winning the long jump for the Eagles, Konner Rowden-Stum taking the crown for Hi-Plains in the triple jump with a new school record, and Titus Glanz bringing it home for Idalia in the discus.
The Idalia girls had a very strong showing, tallying 60 points to finish third in the team race. Hi-Plains nearly cracked the top 10, scoring an 11th-place standing with 38 points. Stratton wasn’t far behind, claiming 13th place with 28 points.
Krista Wieser made quite the name for herself, as the Idalia freshman won the 100-meter dash, finished second in the 200, fourth in the 400, and was part of a relay team that also made the podium. Emily Mason ended her Hi-Plains career with a title in the long jump. She won the triple jump crown as a freshman.
