Celtic were not expected to even challenge the Rangers for the Premiership title this time around, after finishing 25 points behind the Ibrox side in the previous campaign. On top of that, they had a vastly different squad, with most of the first-team regulars arriving in the summer and a manager in the form of Ange Postecoglou, who had never managed a top flight European club before arriving at Parkhead.

Thus, considering all the odds that were against them, Celtic have enjoyed a remarkable season to say the least, winning the Premiership comfortably by the end and also added another Scottish League Cup to their trophy cabinet as well.

While it is difficult to get to the mountain top, it is even harder to stay there. That is what Postecoglou’s side will be aiming to do next season while also competing in the Champions League group stage after many years.

Thus, it is pretty clear that the club will need to make additions over the summer and Chris Sutton has sent the board a clear message. He wrote in his column in the Daily Record:

"We don’t stop. We all know Ange Postecoglou’s mantra by now and his players clearly bought in to it last season. Now it’s the board’s turn.By the looks of it Celtic’s money men are getting ready to back the manager and it’s the least he deserves after pulling off a remarkable victory in the Premiership last season. You won’t be able to convince me the Parkhead board were banking on getting Champions League football when the last campaign kicked off.It was a complete rebuilding mission and it’s been successful so far.So far, being the phrase.Celtic cannot afford to stop now."

Sutton is very correct here. Celtic cannot rest on their laurels and stop here. Postecoglou needs to be and has earned the right to be backed in the upcoming summer transfer window after a brilliant first season in charge of the club.

There are positive noises coming out of the media, which is a huge boost, as it looks like they are closing in on permanent deals for Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

If they are able to do that, it would be a very positive step in the right direction but on top of that, more is needed. Celtic are moving in the right direction but they cannot afford to go off the path now. Not after they have come this far.
