Vehicle Pursuit Ends in Traffic Collision and Officer-Involved Shooting

Ontario, San Bernardino County, CA: An Ontario Police Department vehicle pursuit ended in a traffic collision and officer-involved shooting late Friday evening, May 27, 2022.

An Ontario Police officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle at 7:37 p.m. in the area of Mission Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue in the city of Ontario. When the driver failed to stop, officers engaged in a pursuit with the suspect who led officers through the cities of Montclair and Pomona, according to Ontario PD.

The suspect vehicle then crashed into an uninvolved motorist in the area on Ninth Street and Kadota Avenue which is an unincorporated area of Pomona, according to Ontario PD.

Ontario PD said that moments after the collision, the suspect driver fled from his vehicle armed with a firearm. An Ontario PD K-9 was deployed and attempted apprehension of the suspect. As officers approached the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers at the scene performed life-saving measures until the Montclair Fire Department arrived at the location. The suspect driver was later pronounced deceased.

Ontario PD has identified the suspect driver as 39-year-old Pomona Resident Miguel Angel Rodriguez. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

Ontario PD said a passenger from the suspect vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The driver of the secondary vehicle received medical treatment for minor injuries resulting from the traffic collision. A passenger from the secondary vehicle was uninjured and also cooperated with investigators.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the shooting investigation.
