Bob Huggins, Neal Brown Open to Rodney Gallagher Playing Basketball at WVU

West Virginia football commit Rodney Gallagher was on 93.7 The Fan with Adam Crowley to discuss his recruitment process. Gallagher, who played basketball as well at Laurel Highlands High School, was asked about his basketball recruitment, to which WVU men’s basketball head coach Bob Huggins reached out to him.

“West Virginia was actually knocking a lot too. Coach Huggins is a great dude,” Gallagher said. “They told me that the doors are still open if I ever decide to want to play basketball again down there.”

Gallagher, a 6-foot point guard, led Laurel Highlands to a 5A WPIAL Championship in March. The Uniontown, PA, native scored 26 points on 8-of-20 shooting in the championship game. Gallagher has committed to sticking with football for the meantime.

The future Mountaineer mentioned to Crowley that football head coach Neal Brown is ‘all for it’ if Gallagher wants to play basketball at West Virginia as well.

“Neal Brown was all for it and coach Huggins was all for it. And they still are if I ever want to do that again.”

During his recruitment for basketball, Gallagher was offered by Florida, George Mason, Hampton, Illinois, Penn State, Pitt, Rhode Island, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

West Virginia basketball currently has no commitments yet for the class of 2023. Current WVU F James Okonkwo was in the 2023 class before reclassifying to 2021.

For now, Gallagher will come to West Virginia as the football program’s sixth-highest commit in history. The multi-sport athlete is the highest recruit under the Neal Brown era. Gallagher finished off his junior year with 1,365 passing yards, 1,130 rushing yards and 31 total touchdowns.
