Clark, Hand counties note COVID-19 deaths

HURON — The rate of COVID variant infection in the state continues to pick up with each successive South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) weekly COVID-19 report.

The final report of the month of May showed the state increased active virus cases for the sixth straight weekly report.

The state reported 595 new positive cases, 362 new recovered cases, and eight new deaths in Wednesday’s DOH report. One of the new deaths was a child, the third reported death of a child under 10 due to the virus within the state.

Active COVID-19 cases in the state rose to 1,470.

Beadle County added three new positive cases and three new recovered cases, keeping the active cases in the county at 19.

The Heartland Region added 16 new positive cases, 15 new recovered cases, and two new deaths on the week. Active cases in the seven-county region remained stable at 45.

Vaccinations continue to move at a slow pace across the state.

Statewide, 1,240,849 doses of vaccine have been administered to 525,569 persons. That equates to 73.1% of the eligible population having received at least one dose of vaccine.

The state reports 59.7% of eligible residents have received a full series of vaccination and 34.4% of eligible residents have received a booster dose of the vaccine.

In Beadle County, 24,539 doses of vaccine have been administered to 10,294 county residents. That equates to 53.8% of the population receiving at least one dose of vaccine.

The county has seen 54.4% of eligible population complete a vaccine series to be fully vaccinated. Those who are fully vaccinated in the county represent 49.8% of the entire county population.
