Ryan Christie responds to question about Celtic exit critics

A lot of eyebrows were raised when Ryan Christie decided to leave Celtic last summer to join Bournemouth. He had made a great start under the management of Ange Postecoglou but was in the final six months of his contract with the club. As a result, a move away from Parkhead suited both parties at that point of time.

In hindsight, it did not end up having a huge impact on Celtic’s season, as they went on to win the Scottish Premiership and League Cup double.

Coming back to Christie, the move was viewed as a step down by many. But it has certainly been justified to a large extent after Bournemouth secured second spot in the Championship this season and promotion up to the Premier League as a result.

As reported by the Daily Record, while speaking on BBC Sportsound, he was asked about the critics of his Celtic exit to join Bournemouth and he said:

"“When I moved to Bournemouth that was my goal. It was to try and get promoted.“I’m absolutely over the moon that we have managed to get that. Plenty of people have said to me you must be happy to quieten a few people down, but I don’t really see it like that.“My dream was to play in the Premier League. A lot of people told me how tough the Championship was going to be, so I definitely felt that towards the end of the season.“I knew how big an achievement it was going to be if we managed to do it, and thankfully we got over the line.“Now it’s just a huge excitement waiting for next season.“It’s been such a new experience, but I’ve loved every minute of it.”"

Christie responds to question about critics of his Celtic exit to join Bournemouth

Several players over the years have left Celtic to play in the Premier League and the fact that he will be playing in the competition next season means that ultimately, the move to Bournemouth worked out for Christie.

On the other hand, most Celtic fans won’t be devastated about it either, considering how it ultimately turned out for the Hoops. After the disastrous 2020/21 campaign, they have managed to carve out a new identity for themselves under the management of Postecoglou this time around.

It is also worth remembering that Christie was one of the major underperformers for Celtic during the previous campaign.

It is great that he has managed to help Bournemouth get promoted to the Premier League and we can only wish him the best of luck moving forward. On the other hand, Celtic will be turning their attention towards the upcoming campaign, with the Scottish crown to defend and Champions League group stage football to look forward to.
