A nineteen-year-old Columbia man was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in a 2020 homicide in Columbia, according to a press release.
Maurice D. Banks, Jr. of Columbia was arrested in Las Vegas by members of the U.S. Marshals Service and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and armed criminal action.
In November 2020, police responded to a report of shots fired at the Cosmopolitan Recreation Area Park in Columbia, where they found 19-year-old Jermaine Spain dead. Officers found a second gunshot victim, who received medical attention at a local hospital.
Columbia police had arrested a 15-year-old juvenile that night, November 2, and charged him with second-degree murder. Days later, he was discharged after detectives found information no longer implicating the juvenile, according to the press release at the time.
Banks was under probation for a felony charge of distribution of a controlled substance, for which he was charged in November 2020. He was placed on five years of probation in September 2021.
