A Pennsylvania woman suffered a broken neck when her car was struck by a runaway dump truck tire on a South Jersey highway Wednesday, her family said.
Tracy Snyder, 61, of Macungie, Pa., was driving south on Route 42 in Runnemede around 2 p.m. when her SUV was hit by the tire, authorities said. The tire came off a dump truck traveling northbound.
The right rear tandem tires on the truck “separated from the vehicle,” according to a New Jersey State Police spokeswoman. The tires struck a car traveling north before one of them flew into the southbound lanes and struck Snyder’s vehicle.
Snyder was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where she was undergoing surgery to repair broken vertebrae in her neck and back, according to her son, Keegan Moyer.
“She’s stable, having breathing support and vertebrae repair today,” Moyer said Friday morning.
Snyder was driving to the Jersey Shore when the accident occurred.
“My grandmother was in the car with her. She was just going to drop my grandmother off with my aunt and uncle who live down by the shore,” Moyer explained.
His grandmother was not injured.
Moyer said he has not been able to speak with his mom because she remains intubated at the hospital.
“She can open her eyes and she can move, so they don’t think there’s any cord damage,” he said.
Moyer wants to know how the truck lost its tires. Those details remain under investigation, according to the New Jersey State Police. No charges have been announced.
“I’ve never heard of tires just flying off of a dump truck before,” Moyer said.
