CHARLOTTE — The South and West are home to the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., although none are found locally. Between July 2020 and 2021, the city of Charlotte grew by 2,962 people — or about 0.3% — to reach an estimated population of 879,709, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The bureau released its 2021 population estimates for towns and cities this week. It follows the release earlier this year of metro and county population estimates, which put the Charlotte metro area at about 2.7 million residents — up by some 31,381 people over the year — and Mecklenburg County at 1.12 million people — up by more than 3,900 residents.

Charlotte is the 16th-largest city in the U.S., the estimates showed.
Since the latest Census count as of April 1, 2020, the Queen City’s population rose an estimated 0.6%, by about 5,168 people. That growth rate among incorporated areas in the U.S. with at least 50,000 residents ranked at No. 238.
