Razorbacks T14th After Day 1 at NCAA

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira and Segundo Oliva Pinto each shot a 1-over-par 71 and the #14 Razorbacks are tied for 14th after carding a 14-over 294 to stand in a tie for 14th at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, played at Garyhawk Golf Club’s Raptor Course (par 70, 7,289-yards).

Arkansas played in the afternoon wave with tee times after 1:20 pm and beginning on hole 10. Of the top 15 teams, only Texas (11th), Georgia (11th) and Arkansas had tee times after 12:25 pm.

“I thought we did a great job,” head coach Brad McMakin said. “It was really tough this afternoon. The greens were really firm. We got off to a slow start but they hung in there. The rounds of 71 by Mateo and Segundo were fantastic. It was a great team effort. Now we have to go and take advantage by playing the morning wave tomorrow.”

Vanderbilt leads after 18 holes with a 2-over-par 282, followed by Oregon and Auburn at +5, and Kansas and Arizona at +6.

Both Fernandez de Oliveira and Oliva Pinto had two birdies and three bogeys for their 71 to tie for 16th. Fernandez de Oliveira had one of four birdies on the day on 18 to make the turn at even par and, after bogeys on his 10th and 15th holes, he birdied his 17th hole – the par-3 eighth.

Oliva Pinto reeled off nine pars to start the day then opened his back nine with two bogeys. However, he posted back-to-back birdies on his 13th and 14th holes. He did drop a shot on his 16th hole, the par-4 seventh that played as the second-hardest hole of day one.

Julian Perico had a similar inward nine to Oliva Pinto. Perico had bogeys on two of his first three holes after the turn. Then, like Oliva Pinto, had birdies on his 13th and 14th holes of the day. And, like Oliva Pinto, had a bogey on his 16th hole, the par-4 seventh. Perico battled to shoot 74 after a tough-luck triple bogey on hole 15. He is tied for 62nd.

Luke Long is tied for 131st (78) and Wil Gibson, who birdied his final two holes, is tied for 143rd (79).

Arkansas will once again pair up with Georgia and Wake Forest for round two Saturday. The team will stat at 10 am (CT) off hole #1.

OPENING ROUND NOTES:

  • Arkansas played the par 3’s at even, third-best among the field.
  • Arkansas’ 59 pars were sixth-best among the field.
  • Fernandez de Oliveira had one of the four birdies recorded on the 18th hole. It was the Razorbacks’ lone birdie of their first nine holes.
  • The 18th hole was the third-toughest hole, playing at +0.55 over par and Arkansas played that hole at 1-under thanks to Fernandez de Oliveira’s birdie and four pars. The 13th hole played as the fifth-toughest hole (+0.31) and Arkansas’ four counting scorers each had pars on the hole.
