Prep Roundup: Cardinal teams pound Posen on road

Taylor Larson and the Onaway softball team cruised past Posen in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday.

POSEN – The Onaway softball team plated a combined 29 runs over a two-game stretch in a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Posen on Friday.  

Sparking the offense of the Cardinals in a 7-4 game one win was Sydney Peel, who blasted a three-run homer. Kailyn George went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Macie Decker was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  

Peel was Onaway’s winning pitcher, striking out five, walking five and allowing three hits.

In a 22-8 game two triumph, Elissa Prow and Lily Parr both went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Sadie Decker finished 2-for-2 at the plate for the Cards, who finished with 16 hits in the contest.  

Lainey Shimel earned the win on the mound, striking out two, walking seven and allowing five hits.  

Onaway (16-8) wraps up its regular season when it travels to Rogers City on Tuesday.  

Bats lift Onaway baseball to sweep over Vikings  

POSEN – Like the Onaway softball team, the baseball Cardinals’ bats were on fire in a sweep over Posen on Friday.  

Cody Ruppert went 4-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and a run scored to lead the Cardinals to a 17-6 game one victory over the Vikings.  

Tallying three hits apiece were Jack Morgan (double, two RBI, two runs) and Austin Veal (four runs), while Justin Kramer (double, three RBI, two runs), Cole Selke (RBI, three runs) and Lucas Lovelace (RBI, two runs) chipped in with two hits apiece.   

Bridger Peel earned the pitching win for Onaway, striking out two, walking two and allowing a hit. Mason Beebe, who tossed one inning in relief, struck out two, allowed four hits and walked four. Veal threw the last two innings, striking out six and allowing a hit.  

Jadin Mix smacked a three-run homer and scored two runs to fuel the Cardinals in a 20-5 game two win and sweep.  

The Cardinals received three-hit games from Gavin Green (double, two RBI, run) and Veal (RBI, three runs). Finishing with two hits apiece were Ruppert (double, two RBI, three runs), Lovelace (two RBI, three runs) and Selke (RBI, two runs). Tucker Price (double, two RBI, run), Justin Kramer (two runs) and Dylan Szymoniak rounded out the Cards with hits.  

Szymoniak earned the win on the mound, striking out one, walking two and allowing a hit. Morgan pitched two innings in relief, allowing a hit and striking out one. Selke struck out two in one inning of work.  

Onaway (15-9) heads to Rogers City for a twinbill on Tuesday.  

Hornets split at East Jordan in regular season finale  

EAST JORDAN – The Pellston softball team finished off its regular season by earning a split in a rare Friday afternoon non-conference doubleheader at East Jordan.  

Despite suffering a 3-2 loss in the opener, the Hornets (13-15) rebounded with a 2-0 shutout win to seal their split and head into the postseason with momentum.  

Madison Brown was the winning pitcher for Pellston in game two, striking out nine and allowing three hits in a complete-game performance.  

Lillie Bourrie led the Hornets’ offense with two hits, including a double, while Gabby Landon and Brown each laced a single.  

Brown, who took the loss on the mound in the opener, struck out 10 and allowed just one hit in a solid display.  

Brown helped her cause at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double. Haleigh Bohn and Caroline Crenshaw each doubled.  

Pellston will host St. Ignace in a Division 4 pre-district clash on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
