The Crossing has unveiled its 2022-23 season, entitled “Cultivate / Curate.”

The season will include a number of high-profile collaborations and premieres.

“The Crossing has commissioned a number of works addressing our relationship to the earth, our care and absence of care in curating and managing responsibilities that have fallen to us as the planet’s most innovative and deadly species,” said The Crossing conductor Donald Nally in an official press statement released by the company. “This season brings those themes together in a joyful, thoughtful, and explorative way, through two concerts in the open fields of a Bucks County farm and new works from Ted Hearne, Caroline Shaw, George Lewis, Jennifer Higdon, John Luther Adams, and Julia Wolfe – all focused on the earth, its creatures, and its health.”

The season opens with “Walking the Farm; a Progressive Concert” in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The showcase will take audience members throughout five stations around a farm where they will listen to music while enjoying food and drinks with other participants. The showcase will include new music by George Lewis as well as works by Kirsten Broberg and David Shapiro, among others.

Performance Dates: Sept. 17 & 18, 2022

Next up, The Crossing will collaborate with cellist Maya Beiser for a performance of Gordon’s “Travel Guide to Nicaragua” at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill and at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall.

Performance Dates: Nov. 16 & 17, 2022

That will be followed up the annual “The Crossing @ Christmas” showcase with works by Caroline Shaw and Mason Bates.

Performance Dates: Dec. 6 & 18, 2022

To kick off the New Year, the company will present a world premiere by Jennifer Higdon as well as music by Composer-in-Residence Ayanna Woods, among others.

Performance Dates: Feb. 24 – 28, 2023

The Crossing then combines forces with saxophone quartet PRISM for a world premiere by Martin Bresnick entitled “Self-Portrait, Unfinished.”

Performance Dates: March 24, 2023

The company will then present John Luther Adams’ “Vespers of the Blessed Earth” in collaboration with The Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The showcase will take place at the Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center and at Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall.

Performance Dates: March 30 – April 2, 2023

Next up is a collaboration with the New York Philharmonic. The two organizations will premiere Julia Wolfe’s “Unearth.”

Performance Dates: June 1 -3, 2023

The season comes to a close with the world premiere of Ted Hearne’s “Farming,” which will take place at King Oaks Farm.

Performance Dates: June 22 – 25, 2023

There will be an additional showcase in July / August 2023 that has yet to be announced.
