Travis Kelce is arguably the greatest tight end in league history. At the very least, he has been the most dominant TE during his entire career with the Kansas City Chiefs. His pass-catching ability is one of the cornerstones of KC's deadly attack. He's one of Patrick Mahomes' favorite targets for a reason.

Despite his insane production, the Chiefs TE hasn't gotten an insane payday like his peers. The lack of a fat contract baffled fellow star tight end George Kittle, who implied that Travis Kelce should be paid like a wide receiver. Kelce reacted to these comments, saying that: (via Charles Goldman)

“Money is secondary in my mind, I'm here for the legacy. I'm here to try and make the Kansas City Chiefs the best team possible.”

Star wide receivers in the NFL are getting paid more and more over the years. It all came to a head in 2022, when a huge boom in the WR market led to large paydays for every receiver in the league. The Chiefs actually fell victim to this, as Tyreek Hill wanted out of the team after failing to secure a massive extension from them.

Patrick Mahomes' record-breaking contract means that the Chiefs are a little strapped for cash moving forward. Kelce not asking for a big contract from the team helps them keep their contending window open. They can keep arguably the best tight end in the game at a reasonable price.

The Chiefs are gearing up for a brutal fight in the AFC next season. With most teams improving one way or another, it's up to them to keep up with their competitors. Can they make it back to the Super Bowl?
