School locked down after hunter with handgun, 2 rifles found on school property

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. -- Cassopolis Ross Beatty High School was placed on lockdown Friday after a man with two rifles was located on school property, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office. The man told deputies he was hunting and had a hunting license.

Around 10:45 a.m., deputies responded to the area of Kamp Kozy Street and Ranger Drive near the high school for a report of a person with a firearm near the school.

When deputies arrived, they found the man in his vehicle on the road.

The man told deputies he was small game hunting in the neighboring field. He had several firearms including a handgun, two rifles with scopes and a pellet rifle with a scope, deputies said.

He had a valid concealed pistol license and had in his possession a valid small game hunting license.

School staff said Ranger Drive is school property.

Deputies seized the guns and concealed pistol license.

The school was on lockdown during the incident.

Deputies cleared the school and did not find anyone on campus that did not belong.
