The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is ensuring safety at airports this weekend with deputies on duty, including four-legged officers.
The sheriff's department has a total of four explosive detection dogs.
Specifically for the explosive detection unit, Homeland Security comes every year and puts the dogs and handlers through a three-day evaluation.
Deputy Alex Colon said it's important to have a second set of eyes out for explosives, like 6-year-old K-9 Folti.
"We train five to six days a week. I do give him one rest day," Colon said. "Training is hopefully is all we have to do. If my career is all training that's great. That means nothing bad has happened regarding explosives, but if it does happen we're ready."
To break down the process of detecting an explosive, Colon explained by saying, "I smell a cheeseburger and I think that's a good burger. Folti and his brothers and sisters out there they smell every ingredient."
