Fairfield schools placed on brief lockdown due to suspicious activity

FAIRFIELD, Iowa —
The Fairfield Community School District and other schools in the area were placed on a brief lockdown Friday due to a report of suspicious activity.

Around 12:40 p.m. Friday, the Fairfield Police Department received a report of a suspicious person with a handgun near Pence Elementary School.
Fairfield and Maharishi area schools were in a shelter-in-place order for at least an hour.
Authorities investigated and determined there was no immediate threat. The lockdown was lifted at 1:45 p.m.
In a press release issued Friday afternoon, Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding said officers searched the area for the armed suspect, but were unable to locate the man matching his description.
The investigation is ongoing.
