WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol is already preparing for his next ring return, according to his promoter.

Earlier this month in Las Vegas, Bivol picked up a career defining victory when he outboxed pound-for-pound star Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez over twelve rounds to secure a dominant unanimous decision.

It was the second defeat of Canelo's career and his first since a 2013 points loss to Floyd Mayweather.

Canelo had the option to exercise an immediate rematch clause, but he's bypassed that option to move forward with a scheduled defense of his WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO super middleweight straps in a trilogy fight against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17.

That scenario has left the door wide open for Bivol to fight an opponent of his choice in the coming months.

"Dmitry has begun his preparations for the next fight already. But it is impossible to say, who will be the next person to fight with - we have just begun to think about it, " Bivol's promoter Andrey Ryabinskiy told Sky Sports.

"I believe in Dmitry. Today he is definitely one of the best fighters in the world because of the combination of his physical conditions, his abilities to concentrate on the result and his technique."

Promoter Eddie Hearn has mentioned the idea of matching Bivol against undefeated British Olympian Joshua Buatsi, who recently won a tough twelve round decision over countryman Craig Richards.

Provided both win their upcoming bouts, Hearn would like stage a rematch between Canelo and Bivol in May of 2023.

But, Bivol would like to unify the entire division by facing the winner of next month's light heavyweight unification between Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith, who collide for the IBF, WBC, WBO titles.
