Fairfield Schools placed on lockdown after reports of armed man near Pence Elementary

FAIRFIELD, Iowa (KCRG) - On Friday afternoon, Fairfield Schools announced that all Fairfield Community Schools were placed under a Level 2 lockdown in a message on their Facebook page.

Jefferson County Dispatch responded to a report that an armed male was on the grounds of Pence Elementary School. A search was made for a man matching the description with the assistance of a K-9 officer.

The lockdown order was issued for all of the Fairfield schools.

No parties matching the description of the suspect were located.

The school stated that law enforcement had secured the areas around each of the FCSD attendance centers and that students who are being picked up in personal vehicles were released at approximately 1:45 PM.

Law enforcement efforts shifted to a criminal investigation of the possible brandishing of a firearm on school grounds. The investigation is ongoing.

At approximately 3:00 pm, school officials thanked police for their response and informed the public that all buildings were clear of students.
