School Policies

The student brought the BB gun to school two days after a high schooler shot and killed 21 people at an elementary school in Texas.

Arkansas school districts can allow teachers and staff to carry guns inside school buildings. In 2017, Arkansas lawmakers passed legislation to allow people with a concealed handgun license to possess them inside a vehicle in a public school parking lot or drop-off zone.

These rules do not make it legal for children to bring firearms to school.

The Lavaca Student Handbook specifies that students may not have a firearm on school grounds. It defines "firearm" as "any device designed, made, or adapted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or any device readily convertible to that use."
