A gun show scheduled to open Saturday in Concord was cleaning up vandalism outside the venue Friday.
The word "murderers" was spray-painted on signs pointing the way to the gun show. The show is being held for the first time in a couple of years because of the pandemic, and it comes just days after 19 children and two teachers were killed in a school shooting in Texas, something the show's organizer called heartbreaking.
"It's horrible," said Walter Norris, of New Hampshire Arms Collectors. "I'm thinking of all these little kids, you know? I have a grandson who's 11, and I could not imagine anything like that happening."
Norris said he understands that some people are upset about the timing of the show, but he said canceling it would have cost tens of thousands of dollars, and it wasn't feasible to reschedule.
"People are coming in from Arizona, from Florida, and there was just no way to stop it at this point," he said.
It's unclear if police are investigating the vandalism. News 9 reached out to Concord police but did not hear back.
The shooting in Texas has renewed debate over gun control laws.
"I think the reality is the gun show is going to happen in Concord this weekend, and so the number one way that we can start to take action is to close gun show loopholes," said Zandra Rice Hawkins, a Concord city councilor who is also director of the Gun Sense project of Granite State Progress.
Norris said he believes gun control laws haven't worked in the past, citing as an example a temporary federal ban on new large-capacity magazines. He said there were so many old magazines still on the market, that the ban just drove up prices.
"There's so many things out there in the world," he said. "They couldn't ban the existing magazines, so what happens? A magazine that normally sells for $10 went up to $50."
