SANDY, Utah (KUTV) — The driver of an SUV who police say sped through a red light in Sandy, Utah causing a nine-car crash has died, police say.
The incident happened shortly before 8:40 a.m. MDT Friday.
Sandy police Lt. Dean Carriger said the driver of an SUV ran a red light at full speed and crashed into another vehicle in the intersection. The SUV driver died at the scene.
The driver's identity has not been released.
Seven additional vehicles crashed after two SUVs collided, and multiple people were injured.
Two people were transported to the hospital, police said. Their current conditions are not known.
Others sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
It wasn't immediately known why the SUV ran the red light, but Carriger said "excessive speed" is suspected to be a factor. Police are working to determine if impairment or distracted driving contributed to the crash.
Authorities said State Street, where the crash happened, will likely remain closed through the remainder of the morning for the investigation and cleanup.
This weekend marks the beginning of the 100 Deadliest Days on Utah roads, a period between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends when road fatalities are typically much higher.
