In a familiar scene Friday afternoon in Brooklyn, Gervonta Davis pushed his opponent as they prepared to pose for pictures after making weight for their lightweight title fight Saturday night.

Davis pushed Rolando “Rolly” Romero off the stage, but Romero landed on his feet and was not injured. Romero immediately jumped back up on the stage and went after Davis, though they were quickly separated and both boxers walked away unharmed.

An agitated Davis took exception to Romero standing in front of him and flexing his muscles. He then pushed Romero from behind.

The scene was reminiscent of the brawl Davis initiated in Atlanta in December 2019, when he shoved Yuriorkis Gamboa at their weigh-in. Davis was overweight on his first try and frustrated the day before that 12-round, 135-pound title fight.

Davis (26-0, 24 KOs) had no difficulty making weight Friday, though.

The WBA world lightweight champion, stepped on the New York State Athletic Commission’s scale at 133¾ pounds. Romero (14-0, 12 KOs), the WBA’s number one contender in the lightweight division, officially weighed 134¼ pounds.

Baltimore’s Davis, 27, and North Las Vegas’ Romero, 26, will headline a four-fight Showtime Pay-Per-View event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Caesars Sportsbook listed Davis as an 8-1 favorite Friday.

These rivals, both promoted by Floyd Mayweather’s company, were supposed to meet December 5 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Isaac Cruz replaced Romero as Davis’ opponent five weeks earlier due to Romero’s legal trouble.

A woman with whom Romero was acquainted accused him of sexually assaulting her at some point in the fall of 2019. Detectives for the Henderson (Nevada) Police Department investigated her allegation, but they declined to file charges against Romero.

The 12-round, 135-pound championship bout between Davis, who defeated Cruz by unanimous decision and went 12 rounds for the first time in nine years as a pro, and Romero was later rescheduled for Saturday night.
