Crash shuts down highway at Gordon Road intersection

For the second time this month and the third since mid-April, Door County emergency personnel were forced to shut down State Highway 42/57 due to a major accident involving two vehicles at the Gordon Road intersection.

The road was closed to most motorists between Egg Harbor Road and Forest Road after 9 a.m. Friday so crews could clean debris off the northbound lane and tend to a heavily damaged sports utility vehicle that sat in a nearby ditch. A service vehicle with a damaged back door was towed away from the scene at approximately 9:20 a.m. after ambulances were seen leaving the intersection. No other details are available at this time. Door County Daily News will provide more information as it becomes available.

At least two people were transported to the hospital after a three-vehicle accident at the same intersection on May 11th, just over a month after a different incident that damaged two vehicles on April 7th.

According to DOT data, five of the 11 crashes between 2017 and 2021 involved motorists traveling east on Gordon Road colliding with those traveling south on STH 42/57. One other collision involved a driver traveling north. Only one of those six crashes was due to a person failing to stop at the stop sign, which occurred on August 18th, 2020. The other crashes involved people failing to yield the right of way to traffic on State Highway 42/57.
