Harry Kane lifts lid on brutal Royal Marines boot camp that helped World Cup bid with England stars sleeping in tents

HARRY KANE says England’s success at the last World Cup was down to getting grilled by the Royal Marines.

Kane, 28, was on the Jimmy Fallon Show to promote the exhibition at the Museum of London, celebrating his journey from Leyton Orient loanee to Tottenham legend.

The Spurs striker is now just five goals away from becoming England’s all-time greatest ever goal scorer – closing in on Wayne Rooney’s tally of 53.

It is a record Kane could clinch during the next World Cup in November.

And asked about the build-up to Russia 2018 – where Gareth Southgate’s men reached the semi-finals – Kane explained: "Our coach took us down to the Royal Marines for a few days and kind of get together to do some team bonding.

"And I loved it, if I'm honest. I really enjoyed it.

"They took our phones away, put us in uniform, took us straight out into the middle of the forest and we learnt how to put up the tents they sleep in and cooking on the fire.

"We were all there with the Marines, slept over, we did some tactical training in the woods.

"Then did a three-mile hike at 5am the next morning. We did it all.

"The training, I think they call it the sheep's dip when you go under the tunnel in water and everything like that.

"It was really cool. It was great for that team bonding aspect. We were together for three days getting to know them, them getting to know us.

"As a team we were together and I think it really helped us in that World Cup."

On breaking that record and making history in Qatar, Kane added: "I'm excited, the last World Cup was really special.

"We got to the semi-final which was the first semi-final we got to for 30 years as a nation.

"The country was going mad, but of course we fell that one step short. So, I'm really looking forward to this one, we have a great team, really good players, a really good coach.

"We've been building nicely to this World Cup and I'm really looking forward to it. And hopefully I can try and break that goal record while we're there."

Kane also revealed that his friend and NFL star Tom Brady gave him a sly hint that he would be returning from retirement following a chat.

He said: "When I was away at another club on loan early on I wasn’t getting in the team, and one thing that inspired me was a Tom Brady documentary. It gave me real belief.

"We got in touch. I was following him on Instagram and he commented on one of my pics. I slid into his DMs and he was a great guy and just grew our a relationship from there.

"I wasn’t 100 per cent sure he was coming back. He came to a game in the UK about two months ago. The day before he announced he was coming back I asked him how retirement was.

"He admitted he wasn’t sure if he was ready yet. He didn’t say any more but I thought it was great. I love watching him."

Kane ended the interview by playing Fallon at table football, which he won 2-0.
