Learn how to preserve and protect historic wood windows at a June 17 – 18 workshop in Madison, Indiana. Participants in the Save That Sash event will take guided tours of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District on Friday. On Saturday five experts will teach how to care for, maintain, and preserve old wooden windows. Register by June 15 online at bit.ly/savethatsash. The cost is $50 per person and includes all materials and supplies and lunch on Saturday.

Participants in Save That Sash will compare historic windows to the current replacement and repair options throughout downtown Madison. They will learn the key components of a window and the care they need in order to continue reflecting and protecting interiors for decades to come. The program begins Friday, June 17 from 1:30 – 4:30 at Madison’s City Hall. It includes a trolley tour and a guided walking tour to look at a variety of windows in the historic district.

The workshop continues Saturday from 9:30 – 4 featuring a day of hands-on sessions with wood window experts on the grounds of the Historic Madison Inc. office 301 W 2nd Street (weather dependent). Participants will have time with each of the five window experts to learn how to assess a window’s condition, repair a window’s sash and frame, identify types of glass, explore storm windows options, improve energy efficiency, and examine how new wood windows can help when an old window cannot be saved.

This program is a great opportunity for anyone interested in preserving windows for future generations. We look forward to seeing homeowners (both Madisionians and beyond), DIYers, contractors, students, historic preservationists, and community representatives at Save That Sash.

Windows and the materials that make them are non-renewable resources that are worth preserving all on their own. They are some of the most visible parts of a building that add great character and beauty, but they are regularly overlooked or underappreciated to the point of their removal. In historic communities like Madison, they are features of homes, businesses, and facilities that showcase the past while reflecting the present. Saving an old window turns into long-term cost savings, reduces impacts on the environment (particularly what shows up in a landfill), and allows for the preservation of the wood and glass resources that cannot be replicated today.

Save that Sash is presented by Historic Madison, Inc., Indiana Landmarks, and the City of Madison with funding from an Indiana Humanities Historic Preservation Education Grant through the National Endowment for the Humanities.
