Delta Air Lines is cutting back 100 daily flights this summer as travel demand heats up.

"From July 1-Aug. 7, we’ll reduce service by approximately 100 daily departures, primarily in markets in the U.S. and Latin America that Delta frequently serves," the airline announced on its website. "This will build additional resilience in our system and improve operational reliability for our customers and employees; we’ll continue to proactively adjust select flights in the coming weeks."

Delta says the strategic decrease will help mitigate the impact of factors outside their control, like weather and "higher-than-planned" employee absences as COVID cases increase

Passengers whose flights are canceled will be notified by email or mobile update.

FLYING SOON?:You may need to get to the airport 3 hours early

A Delta customer checks in for a flight at San Francisco International Airport on May 12, 2022.

"If upcoming bookings for later this summer happen to change, our teams will provide customers with the next-best itinerary that gets them where they need to go with the shortest delay possible," the airline said.

If the new itinerary is unsatisfactory, Delta will offer refunds or work with passengers to find flights that meet their needs. Customers can also use the Fly Delta app or the website to select another flight without having to call customer service. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires all airlines to offer customers refunds for any flight cancellation, no matter the cause or type of ticket booked.

Several other airlines have proactively scaled back summer flights as well this year, including Southwest, Spirit and JetBlue.
