Daytona Beach police say a 16-year-old suspect wanted for stabbing a teen girl died as officers were attempting to bring him into custody. According to a news release, Aaron A. Moten died at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando early Wednesday morning.The ordeal began around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when Daytona Beach officers were called to Imperial Drive for a stabbing.They discovered a 17-year-old girl outside of the home, bleeding from multiple stab wounds to her arms, legs and head. She was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. Investigators found a bloody knife inside the home. Witnesses provided police a description of Moten and a K9 team tracked him, eventually finding him facedown in the backyard of a Continental Drive property.As Moten was being taken into custody, he became unresponsive, police say. Medics revived him before he was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center. The Orange County Medical Examiner’s office will perform an autopsy on Moten’s body in order to determine the exact cause of death.Chief Jakari Young stated that he believes there is a high likelihood that Moten was on a substance that contributed to his erratic behavior. Young says his officers did everything right after reviewing the body camera video."They took the precautions that were necessary to get him into custody with basically zero use of force," he said. Investigators believe Moten and the 17-year-old stabbing victim knew each other, but the exact motive is unclear. Prior to the stabbing incident, police say Moten was actively listed as a missing juvenile and had an active arrest warrant on charges of battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.Police have body camera of the entire episode and have shown the suspect's mother the video but aren't releasing it yet because the chief has asked FDLE to review it as well.
