GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. (WBPN/WGTU) -- This weekend, thousands of runners will be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Bayshore Marathon.
The Saturday event will be even more special for many, after two-years without the event being held in-person.
Each of the athletes pay an entry fee for their chance to race and it's the culmination of those fees that has helped the Traverse City Track Club make a difference in the community.
Every year about $250,000 of profit from Bayshore events is donated back to the community in the form of grants, scholarships and investing in projects such as the TART Trail paths.
"The money that's raised from the Bayshore is directly responsible for some of the things that we cherish as a community. These trails don't just happen on their own, it's because of the generous giving of lots of folks and the track club has been at the fore of that for generations," said Brian Beauchamp, Communications and Policy Director for TART Trails.
To date, charitable giving to non-profit organizations that align with the club’s walking/running mission has exceeded $2 million.
Runners will be lining up for the start of the marathon Saturday at the base of the Old Mission Peninsula.
