Many took part in line dancing at St. Mary's Park in 2019. Five line dancing sessions are set for this summer. The first is May 31.

The first of five line dancing sessions will take place next week at St. Mary’s Park.

The City of Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Department’s first line dancing event of the season will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 31. Other dates are June 21, July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 6. Dances are held on the park’s tennis courts, 111 W. Elm Ave.

Recorded music from several genres will be played.

Beginners and experienced line dancers are welcome to learn with instructors Kathy and Denise. People of all ages are welcome.

"It seems to be a mix of new and experienced each time. With each line dancing night, everyone gets better, and (they) will learn many dances if they attend often," said Amy Mason, recreation programmer for the City of Monroe’s Parks and Recreation Department. "This is a great way to learn some new dances and get some exercise at the same time. Kathy and Denise will walk through the steps."

Attendees are urged to bring water and to wear comfortable clothing. Admission is free. Registration is not needed.

The City of Monroe offered its first line dancing nights in 2019.

“Heidi Linsenmeyer did a great job with that first line dancing night. We had a great turnout of around 150 people on the courts, and many asked about doing it more often,” Mason said.

After a pandemic hiatus, line dancing returned late last summer.

“We were happy with about 60 attendees, as people were starting to get out again,” Mason said. "My goal was to hold one each month so attendees could retain what they were learning. Line dancing is so much fun. We are very excited to offer these free activities in our city parks."
