Flying it was like “being saddled to a skyrocket”.

Have you ever heard of the English Electric Lightning? It was an extremely capable British fighter jet that served as an interceptor during the 1960s, the 1970s, and into the late 1980s. As of today, it is still the only fighter capable of Mach 2 that was conceived and manufactured in the United Kingdom.

The vertical, staggered layout of its two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet engines within the fuselage is an outstanding feature you should absolutely be aware of. Furthermore, it possessed an extraordinary rate of ascent, ceiling, and speed, with pilots describing flying it as “being saddled to a skyrocket“.

In this video, the YouTube channel of Imperial War Museums shows off its Lightning display at IWM Duxford, which has a particularly intriguing story. If you’re curious to know more and take a detailed look at the aircraft’s design, development, armament, and service history, make sure you watch the video embedded above, and as always, enjoy.
