EDINBORO, Pa. — Preston Knight alum Ward Ries has qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Meet at Grand Valley State University to represent the Edinboro Fighting Scots in the 3K steeplechase.
He is one of two Edinboro athletes to qualify for nationals as Kylie Anicic will be joining him.
Ries ran his best 3K steeplechase time at the Mountaineer Twilight when he clocked an 8:55.68 which ranked him No. 16 in Division II.
Anicic qualified in the 10K where she ranks No. 11 in Div. 1 with a time of 34:37.31 that was achieved at the Bison Outdoor Classic.
The preliminaries for the 3K steeple took place yesterday evening.
Both Ries and Anicic were also recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Track & Field / Cross Country teams, as well as teammate Nick Amos.
Ries holds a 3.88 GPA as a Business Administration major. He was a member of the 2021 PSAC Championship Cross Country team earning First-Team All-Conference honors.
Before 2020’s canceled season, Ries was already making a name for himself for Edinboro. During his freshman season (2018), he earned All-PSAC and All-Atlantic Region honors after the original plan was for him to be redshirted. He played a major role at the PSAC Championships which helped Edinboro finish first (he finished sixth with a 27:08). Two weeks later, he placed 21st at the NCAA Div. II Atlantic Regional to earn All-Atlantic Region accolades and then competed in his first NCAA Div. II National Championship meet. He was also named to the USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic Team.
In 2019, he was an Edinboro Scholar Athlete and earned All-Region accolades for the second year in a row as he moved up from 21st to 10th. He was also fifth at the PSAC Championships two weeks prior.
Following the canceled 2020 season, Ries competed in the 2021 outdoor track & field campaign and placed first at the PSAC Championships back in early May.
When he was at Preston, he competed in cross country for head coach Paul Martin and in track & field for head coach Hilary Bright where he excelled in both. He won the 3200-meter state championship as a senior and earned all-state honors as a junior (he was also the conference and regional champion in that event). In cross country, he achieved all-state marks as a junior and senior while also helping the Knights win the 2017 Big 10 conference title.
Ries is currently a junior at Edinboro.
