Six locals to play in Six-Man All-State football game

ALAMOSA – A total of six senior football players from the San Luis Valley will participate in this year’s Colorado Six-Man All-State Game which will take place June 4 in Hugo at 10 a.m.

All of them will play for the South team.

Four of the locals are from Sierra Grande High School including Isiah Chairez, Lennie Valdez, Matthew Martinez and C.J. Nix.

Chairez was the Panthers’ quarterback and he completed 96 of 138 passes for 1,522 yards and 32 touchdowns, and he also ran for 862 yards on 60 carries and he scored 17 touchdowns. On defense, he had 59 tackles, eight interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

Valdez ran for 213 yards on 25 carries and he scored four touchdowns, and he had 16 receptions for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, he had 92 tackles, 2 ½ sacks, one interception and five fumble recoveries.

Martinez had 14 catches for 233 yards and seven touchdowns, and he ran for 52 yards on four carries and one touchdown. His defensive stats include 34 tackles, three sacks and one fumble recovery.

Nix had 16 receptions for 154 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for 16 yards on four carries. On defense, he had 25 tackles.

Sierra Grande had a record of nine wins and one loss. It won the Southwest League and advanced to the state quarterfinals.

The remaining two are from Mountain Valley including Kodiak Reigel and Tristan Martinez.

Reigel had 21 receptions for 449 yards and five touchdowns. On defense, he had 98 tackles, four sacks and five fumble recoveries.

Martinez had 24 catches for 402 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, he had 84 tackles, four sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries.

Last season, the Indians were 6-4 and advanced to the state playoffs.
