House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) predicts Republicans will come out with a majority after the midterm elections this fall, as a new report suggests additional races leaning in Republicans’ favor.
The GOP could gain as many as 20-35 seats in the House of Representatives, with 10 races flipping Republican in the Cook Political Report’s revised projections.

“Look, I predict we are going to win the majority,” McCarthy said Thursday on Fox Business. “I believe we can raise — win more than enough seats to win the majority.”
But the question, McCarthy said, remains how many seats Republicans are able to flip as they attempt to ride a red wave to the majority. Based on the latest predictions, Republicans could be nearly on par with Democrats‘ 2018 election victories, when they won back the majority and gained a net total of 41 seats. However, in order to flip the House in their favor, Republicans only need a net gain of five seats.

New predictions show Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District changing from a toss-up to leaning Republican. Currently, Democratic Rep. Susan Wild holds the seat.
Several factors have played into a grim outlook for Democrats in 2022, including redistricting. Republicans are expected to pick up three to four seats from reapportionment alone.

“The string of legal setbacks the Democrats have suffered since late February has been staggering,” Dave Wasserman, a national elections analyst for the Cook Political Report, told the Washington Examiner earlier this week. “When you put it all together, just about everything’s going right for Republicans.”
McCarthy is well positioned to be voted House speaker by his peers if there is a red wave in November.
