The Ottumwa Fire Department has made history by hiring the city's first female firefighter, Amanda Hull, to their crew.
KTVO had the opportunity to see the first female firefighter in action during a routine training session on Thursday.
Hull, an Ohio native, told KTVO she is one week and one day into her new role as a firefighter in the Ottumwa Fire Department.
“So far it has been extremely fun and a little bit challenging," said Hull.
Hull set out to become a firefighter in her senior year of high school, after 9/11. She said she was inspired to do something for her country.
Fire Chief Tony Miller said the department is ecstatic about the addition of Hull to their crew.
She’s jumped in with both feet and done a fantastic job. Her first few days on the job have been very exciting," said Miller.
Hull's physical, written, and verbal abilities were tested as part of the process potential hires go through to join the Ottumwa Fire Department.
In her first day at the job, she had the opportunity to meet and greet several children.
“One day we had 120 school kids come in. Girls come up to me and gave me a big hug," said Hull. "They all wanted to see me."
Hull told KTVO she wants to encourage women to follow their goals and aspirations.
I think if that is where your heart is, you should go out and do it. Don’t let anyone stop you," said Hull.
