Somerton celebrates skate park ribbon-cutting ceremony

The long-awaited park is finally ready for local skaters

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - The Somerton skate park is finally ready for local skaters.

Kids of all ages came out to celebrate at Joe Munoz park in Somerton.

The mayor says this project was a big priority for his city council.

“With a local designer we were able to make this skate park," Anaya said.

Local skaters came from San Luis and Yuma to try out the new park.

They were excited about the new features like the bowl, which they say isn’t at other skate parks.

"The other one we got is small, and this one has a bowl, it looks even better than Kennedy actually,” Isaias said.

"With the new rebuilt skate park, we basically have what we want,” Marius said.

Mayor Anaya says Somerton has noticed lower participation in their rec leagues as kids get older, and hopes this skate park keeps young adults out and active locally.

"We just want more amenities for the youth, and this is the first of many we are planning,” Anaya said.

He says the next project is a boxing and jiu-jitsu gym.
