Rodney Davis knows something about gun crimes. The Republican Congressman from Taylorville was at a baseball practice near Washington in 2017, when a gunman fired at the players, wounding U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.).
With that experience, and amid a wave of school shootings of which Uvalde is only the most recent, Davis says guns are not the problem.
“My problem with legislation that is in Congress right now is it goes to far and infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens,” Davis said Thursday. “I will never support a law that infringes on the Second Amendment and on law-abiding citizens like me.”
About the school shootings: “I want to see our schools hardened. I think we should have school resource officers in place. We’ve had attacks on school resource officers from the Democrats for over two years.”
Davis added he wants the Department of Homeland Security to create standards for “what a school security zone should look like,” along with a national emphasis on behavioral health, as “our prisons have become mental health institutions. That has to stop.”
