Beginning Wednesday, Cañon City children can take part in the 2022 Summer Meal Program, which is offered by the Cañon City School District.

From June 1 to July 29, dine-in services will be at Cañon City High School, located at 1313 College Ave. Breakfast will be from 8-9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Children under 19 may eat free of charge. The cost for adults 19 and older is $3 for breakfast and $4 for lunch.

Grab & Go meals will be available at the following locations and times:

  • Cañon Exploratory School, 11-11:15 a.m.
  • Harrison School, 11:25-11:40 a.m.
  • McKinley Elementary, Noon to 12:15 p.m.
  • Lincoln School, 12:20-12:40 p.m. (or until the meals are all gone)

Meals will not be offered on July 4.

Paula Buser started the summer program in 2010, said Janelle Grooms, who is the Nutrition Services Manager for the Cañon City School District.

“The summer program feeds 12,000 to 15,000 kids,” Grooms said.

Because of COVID-19, the program offered pre-packaged meals for the last two years, but children will be able to serve themselves home-cooked meals in the high school cafeteria this year. Children must be present for the dine-in meals.

“We will have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, corndogs,” Grooms said. “We’ve got a variety again as we did in the past.”

Pizza will be offered once a week and fresh fruits and vegetables will be offered daily.

“It’s going to be a great year,” Grooms said. “The choices that I’ve selected for the menu are things that the kids really enjoy. We are back to normal. Thank goodness.”

No registration is required to take part in the summer program. For more information, call Grooms at 719-276-5813
