Abilene's Adventure Cove Aquatic Center will be the place to be Saturday, with temperatures expected to climb well over 100 degrees that afternoon.

The facility will open for the summer season.

Throughout the season, the center at 2742 S. Ninth St. will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and from 1-7 p.m. Sundays and Mondays.

Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for children four feet tall or taller, $4 for children under four feet tall and free for children 2 years old and younger. For information, call 325-676-6217 or go to abilenetx.gov/384/Adventure-Cove.

Memorial Day

► A Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. Monday at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, 7457 West Lake Road. The Dyess Air Force Base Color Guard will present colors, and Abilene Community Band will perform the national anthem.

► A Memorial Day cookout will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at All Star Honda Abilene, 1399 S. Danville Drive. Hamburgers and sausage will be served.

► BROWNWOOD — A Memorial Day program will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Central Texas Veterans Memorial, east of Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood. Visitors are advised to bring a lawn chair.

► A Memorial Day picnic will begin at noon Monday at Wisteria Place Retirement Living, 3401 S. 32nd St. Hot dogs and drinks will be served, and the Clear Fork Guard will post colors at 12:30 p.m.

'The Color Purple'

As part of the Paramount Film Series, showings of "The Color Purple" will begin at 7:30 p.m. June 3 and 4 at the Paramount Theatre, 352 Cypress St.

Children's Art and Literacy Festival

The annual three-day Children's Art & Literacy Festival will begin at 4 p.m. June 9 with a costume contest at the Elks Arts Center, followed by the Storybook Parade at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Abilene.

Other events June 9 include a sculpture unveiling and party at 6:15 p.m. at the Adamson-Spalding Storybook Garden and a sketch session with this year's featured artist, Sophie Blackall, at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.

The festival will continue from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 10 and 11, with events including shows, live theater, book readings, demonstrations and a petting zoo.

June 9 events will be free to the public, but festival passes will be required June 10 and 11. For tickets and information, go to abilenecalf.com.

Abilene StrEATS

The annual Abilene StrEATs outdoor fundraiser meal benefiting United Way of Abilene will be served at 7 p.m. June 4 on the 200 Block of Cypress Street, featuring food and wine pairings by a several local restaurants.

► A free showing of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" will begin at 2 p.m. June 4 at the Abilene Public Library, 202 Cedar St.

► Turning Pointe Dance Academy will present its annual recital, "Roadtrip USA," at 6 p.m. June 4 at the Wylie Performing Arts Center, 4502 Antilley Road. Admission is $15.
