Goreville blanks Woodlawn to advance to sectional championship game

GOREVILLE — Reese Ray threw a two-hit shutout, striking out 12 to lead Goreville past Woodlawn 2-0 and into the championship game of the the Goreville 1A Sectional.

The Blackcats only managed five hits against Woodlawn’s Sadie Mellott, but were able to capitalize on two scoring opportunities. Goreville loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth, and Jayden Tripp delivered a sacrifice fly to score Abby Compton with the game’s first run.

Woodlawn loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth, but Ray got a force out at the plate on Zoey Shields’ bunt then got Caitlen England on a comebacker to end the threat.

Goreville added an insurance tally on Abby King’s two-out single to score Tripp in the seventh, but Ray did not need it as she set the Lady Cardinals down 1-2-3 to end the game.

The Blackcats will face Trico Friday at 4:30 in the title game. The Pioneers beat Pope County 10-0 in five innings. The Lady Cardinals finish their season 19-4.
