Coroner identifies central Pa. man who died in group attack

The York County Coroner’s Office said a man who was attacked for possibly trespassing Wednesday night might have been homeless.

35-year-old Zachary Young died after being attacked by a group of people, York County Coroner Pam Gay said Thursday.

Police have said that Young was confronted about trespassing on private property around 10:25 p.m. in the 200 block of West Jackson Street.

That person confronted Young then alerted a group to Young’s presence and ran after him, police said. The group then began assaulting him, police said.

Young was injured in the assault and transported to WellSpan York Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:41 p.m., Gay said.

The coroner’s office said Young had no fixed address but was last known to be living in York.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, which will help Gay determine the cause and manner of death.

Police said the group that attacked the man ran away before police arrived, and no arrests had been made by Thursday afternoon. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
