Wichita police have identified the man who was killed Wednesday in a confrontation with a SWAT team after a nine-hour standoff at a west side home.

39-year-old Gregorio Banuelos was killed around 10:30 Wednesday morning after a SWAT team went into a home in the 500 block of North Milstead, in a neighborhood near Central and 119th Street West.

Police Captain Jason Stephens told reporters that Banuelos fired a shot at a woman inside the home during an argument early Wednesday, but she was not hurt.   The woman and two other people were able to get out.   Officers saw Banuelos walk onto the front porch with a handgun, then he walked back inside.

Officers found that Banuelos was prohibited from having a gun because of a felony conviction, and he also had two felony warrants in Sedgwick County for a domestic violence incident in October, 2021.   He was charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and criminal threat.

Stephens said officers used loudspeakers to call Banuelos out of the home, and they also tried a phone number, but he refused to answer.    A robot was then sent into the home, but it was unsuccessful, and a phone that was thrown into the home also failed to make contact with Banuelos.    A police dog was sent into the home and the dog helped officers determine that Banuelos was in the basement.   A SWAT team went into the basement and a shot was fired.   Officers saw Banuelos appear in a doorway and he pointed a gun at them, then the officers fired shots and retreated.    Banuelos fired several more shots from the basement.   Officers took positions outside the house, and Banuelos walked into the garage and moved toward the officers in an aggressive manner.    Two officers saw him and fired shots.   EMS personnel were called in, but Banuelos was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two Wichita police officers and two Sedgwick County deputies have been placed on administrative leave.  Wichita police and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office are investigating, along with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
