SUNBURY – The former UPMC Sunbury campus has been donated to DRIVE, an economic development entity serving five counties in central Pennsylvania.
Steven Johnson, president of UPMC for North Central Pa., said when he announced the donation Thursday that a thorough investigation was conducted into the future of uses of the property with the goal of transitioning it as an investment in the community.
He cited DRIVE’s interest in the facility and its desire to use it for job creation and economic development.
“Donating the facility to DRIVE turns the keys of this historic structure over to the community bringing new opportunity to the city,” he said.
The former Sunbury Community Hospital in 2017 became part of UPMC’s then Susquehanna division based in Williamsport.
It closed in the spring of 2020 due to underutilization. The site consists of 20 parcels totaling about 12 acres
DRIVE, which serves Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties, has already fielded numerous inquiries from companies interested in all or part of the complex, said its executive director Jennifer Wakeman.
“We’re open to leasing or selling portions of it if that’s what it takes,” she said. “Our goal is for this facility to continue to be an asset for the city of Sunbury and Northumberland County”
