A Newport News company that helps manufacture Virginia driver’s licenses is expanding its facilities.
Mühlbauer Inc. plans to spend $9 million on its Hampton Roads manufacturing plant, upgrading its equipment at its Oakland Industrial Park facility and increasing its capacity, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Thursday. The move is also expected to create 32 jobs.
In the announcement, Youngkin thanked the company for its continued investment in Newport News.
“Mühlbauer has a history of success in the city of Newport News, which fosters an impressive business climate to attract and retain a robust manufacturing industry,” Youngkin said.
The company, which has been in Hampton Roads for more than 25 years, makes the automated machines that create chip-based cards, like credit or debit cards, as well as inspection equipment for currency and semiconductor chip production. The company is the U.S. subsidiary of Germany-based Mühlbauer Group, which employs around 4,000 people worldwide.
Mühlbauer also uses its equipment to protect Virginia driver’s licenses and licenses in other states against counterfeiting and alteration.
Josef Mühlbauer, Mühlbauer Group founder and CEO, said in the announcement he had grown to love the area and its people.
“Our company has always appreciated the support we have received from the city of Newport News as well as the state of Virginia,” he added.
The company previously expanded its Newport News facilities in 2017, spending $12 million and adding 52,000 square feet to its facility, according to Daily Press reporting. That expansion added 20 more jobs to the location.
