GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – At least one person died Thursday afternoon when storms brought flooding and toppled trees in the Upstate and Western North Carolina.
Flash flood warnings were in effect for Jackson, Transylvania, Oconee, Greenville, Anderson, Haywood, and Henderson Counties until 8:00 p.m.
Flood watches are also in effect for Western North Carolina.
A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for eastern parts of the Upstate and Rutherford County until 10:00 p.m.
Multiple tornado warnings were also issued late Thursday afternoon for Cherokee County and parts of Abbeville, Greenwood, and Laurens counties. There is no confirmation of any tornadoes having touched down at this time.
According to the City of Greenville, heavy rain has caused minor flooding in some areas along Pleasantburg Drive and Laurens Road.
Fire officials confirmed that one person died when a tree fell on a house on East Jefferies Street in Gaffney.
Haywood County has issued a state of emergency due to the potential impacts from flooding.
There are multiple road closures in Haywood County. Those are:
- Blue Ridge Parkway at 215
- Crawford Creek Road
- Inman Branch Road
- The intersection of Sonoma and Pisgah
- Mundy Field
- Lenoir Road
- 110 Campground
Officials said do not drive through floodwaters.
More than 870 Duke Energy customers in Greenville County along with more than 600 in Cherokee County were without power as of 6:00pm, according to the company’s outage map.
Around 1,000 Duke Energy customers in western North Carolina were also without power, nearly half of those in Haywood County.
