Can Magneto Move Thor's Hammer, Even if He Isn't Worthy?

The Mjölnir has been enchanted by Odin that whosoever is worthy shall be able to wield it and summon the power of lightning. Thor has been successful in proving this in the MCU on his very first film and in Endgame, it was Captain America who got ahold of it. But a question remains, if it is Magneto, given his powers of manipulating metal, can he move the hammer even if he is not worthy?

To start, wielding the Mjölnir boils down into two aspects: those who can move it or just lift the object as plain as it is, and those who can wield it to summon the powers of Thor. Odin enchanted the Mjölnir that only those who are worthy would be able to wield such a powerful relic.

This has been a common argument in the whole history of the Mjölnir in the MCU. There was one point where Tony Stark asked whether the elevator is worthy because it can, technically, “lift” the Mjolnir.

Only a few people have been able to move or lift the Mjölnir in the MCU. Of course, there is Odin who put the enchantment, there’s Thor who has the hammer as his primary weapon until Hela destroyed it, there’s Hela who used to wield it and was able to stop it and crush it into pieces, there’s Vision who lifted it to everyone’s surprise, and the latest would be Jane Foster with the re-forged one.

There’s a debate on whether Vision was worthy because when he lifted the Mjölnir, there were no sparks of lighting which is indicative of whether one is worthy enough to possess the power of Thor. Given that Vision is a synthezoid, the Mjolnir could have seen him as a thing, another object.

So, why is Vision relevant on whether Magneto could move Thor’s hammer? Well, the logic here is that Vision can lift the Mjölnir but not wield its power. This goes the same for Magneto, who, technically, can move Thor’s hammer but not possess its power. Even if he is not worthy, he could make it move to his will because of his mutant ability to control metals.

See, he’s called the Master of Magnetism for the very namesake of his moniker: he manipulates metals. The Mjölnir is composed of Uru metals, the powerful and invulnerable Asgardian metal. While it is magical in nature, it remains to be a metal, hence, Magneto could move it with his abilities.

The next wielder of the Mjölnir is Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor and surely, she’s worthy because she can wield the powers that comes with it. Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on July 8, 2022.
