DIAMOND LAKE, Ore. — A passenger died when a man crashed his Tesla Model S into a power pole along Highway 138E near Diamond Lake on Wednesday night, Oregon State Police said.
The crash was reported at about 8:35 p.m. Wednesday along Highway 138E just north of Diamond Lake, and roughly 8 miles from the turnoff to Crater Lake National Park.
Initial reports state Howard Berry, 67, of Milwaukie was speeding west on the highway when his black Tesla Model S went off the road and hit a power pole.
Berry and two of his passengers were all taken to the hospital by helicopter air ambulance.
A fourth passenger, identified as Koelby Edlund, 37, of Canby, was pronounced dead.
“Speed and alcohol use are being investigated as contributing factors to the crash,” Oregon State Police said.
First responders closed the highway for about a half hour.
Oregon State Police had assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Diamond Lake Volunteers, Air Reach, Pacific Power, and ODOT.
